In order to fill out his ranks, Gen. Joseph Johnston relied on the North Carolina Junior Reserves Brigade. These were 16 and 17 year old boys, technically too young to serve in the regular Confederate army. At Bentonville these young soldiers were placed near the center of the Confederate line.
